Electric Forest Remains a Wonderland of Sights and Sounds Unencumbered by Expectations

Over a decade into its tenure, Electric Forest remains a bastion of self-expression.
Amid the emergence of summer 2023—and peak festival season—thousands of ravers flocked to the beloved Rothbury, Michigan-based event to catch captivating live sets from ODESZA, Rezz, ILLENIUM and more.
But they also returned to build community, experience the unexpected and unplug in order to reconnect with nature.

The festival’s stellar talent offering is par for the course at this juncture, but this year especially, fans who dove deeper into what the Forest had to offer outside of its marquee acts didn’t leave disappointed.
One such highlight included the new Dream Emporium, a spider-like structure replacing The Hangar, which led fans on a choose-your-own-adventure-style walkthrough of wayward scenes. One moment you’re walking into a robot karaoke bar, and the next a chaotic car wash intaking rocking horses, beach chairs and more.
In typical Insomniac fashion, the immersive experience was helmed by a cast of committed characters aiding audiences in embracing all the attention-grabbing moments. Overall, fans played a major role in contributing to and making the most of the Forest’s extensive slate of installations and niche experiences.

The quest to experience the unexpected transcended the festival’s onsite activations all the way back onto the mainstage. A particularly open-minded Electric Forest community bore witness to genre-defying back-to-back sets and test-runs for groundbreaking new stage productions.
Apashe’s full “Antagonist Tour,” which features a live brass orchestra playing in tandem with the renowned producer, doesn’t unfold until October. However, despite the complicated logistics of traveling with a full band, Apashe says Electric Forest was especially supportive of him giving the electronic music community a taste of what’s to come.
“This was really motivating because I’m just at the edge of trying new things and there is so much room for improvement,” Apashe told EDM.com following the high-energy performance. “You always need to remember no one does anything great alone, there’s always people behind you.”
Longtime fans of the Electric Forest experience will be the first to tell you that the festival’s greatest strength is its community. At a particularly vulnerable time for the electronic music community given the deadly mass shooting incident at The Gorge Amphitheater, which claimed the lives of two ravers, the Electric Forest family banded together to ensure a collective sense of safety—be it at the campsites, in the beating hot sun or during the festival’s sudden torrential downpour on its final day.
While the festival annually offers lineups that rival the world’s biggest festival properties—and the frills and thrills to spark curiosity beyond what’s simply unfolding onstage—the Electric Forest community, an audience so passionate about actively contriving shared experiences, is its fulcrum. You’ll simply never grasp their warmth and ineffable camaraderie until you experience the Forest for yourself.
